A triple bar indicates 10*10*1000 so V would become 500,000

But the Romans would have simply wrote it out as (D) which means 1000*500 = 500,000

Placing bars above numerals to indicate multiplication was introduced during the Middle Ages and had nothing to do with the ancient Romans because they used brackets to indicate multiplication as for example (((M))) which means 10*10*1000*1000 = 100,000,000 which is 100 million
