Yellow is low oil level, whilst red denotes serious low oil pressure. Oil level sensors on BMWs are known to go faulty especially on E46s. If the yellow light comes on momentarily for about 15 seconds and goes out, this could be a faulty oil level sensor if the oil dipstick reads full.
