∙ 9y agoCalcitonin is a naturally occurring hormone in many animals. In its natural state, it helps regulate levels of calcium and phosphorus. It helps prevent the body from removing calcium from the bones and from reabsorbing the mineral through the urinary tract and kidneys, thus reducing the amount of calcium in the bloodstreams. However, calcitonin does not play as important a role in humans as it does some other animals due to the thyroid gland also helping to regulate calcium levels with other hormones. As a supplement, it is given to patients with osteoporosis to help prevent bone loss.
