Assuming you mean WordArt as used by Powerpoint (for example), then yes, you can spell check. The object is still a text object, it's simply been given decorations such as bevels and drop shadows. But as long as the underlying object is a text object then it can be checked for spelling. If you mean word art in a more general sense, where the text has been converted to a curve or an image (e.g., bitmap), then no, you cannot spell check since it is no longer a text object. You would have to use OCR software to convert back to text.
