You could use the word "covenant" The Old Testament was the old covenant concerning the law and the New Testament is the new covenant which explains the Grace of God to mankind in sending His only begotten Son into the world to save sinners. The old covenant is no longer in force. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Him (Jesus Christ)
Answer 1 Christians believe that the New Testament and the New Covenant replaces the Law of Moses and the Old Covenant.Answer 2It depends on the sect of Christianity and the way the different sects read the New Testament. Of course, since there are many divisions within the major sects, the groupings are provided to give a general idea. There is the perspective that the New Testament is an expansion, but not a replacement of the Old Testament. This is typically espoused by Catholics and Orthodox Christians. They see the Old Covenant as being a way that a certain group of people, the Israelites, were made holy. The New Covenant allows people outside of the Israelite tribes to be grafted into that holiness through accepting the New Covenant. There is also the perspective that the New Testament is a replacement for the Old Testament. Christian groups that espouse this perspective are mostly Protestants. The underlying premise was that God granted holiness to one group of people, the Israelites, who failed to keep his laws. Therefore, God was required to create a New Covenant with the whole world to better bring holiness into it. This law eclipses and replaces the Old Covenant because the Old Covenant was a failure.
Spiritual cleansing is mentioned and the new covenant is implied in Ezekiel 36:25-27

The word Testament means covenant. The Old Testament describes the old covenant God made. The New Testament describes the new covenant Gad made with humans through Christ Jesus. The Old Testament looks forward to Christ where as the New Testament looks back at the promises of Christ.
God made many covenants in the Old Testament, but I assume you are speaking about the "New Covenant" vs the "Old Covenant" which God gave Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai. The "New Covenant" or second was mentioned in the Old Testament several times as a covenant which was yet future. The "New Covenant" started in the New Testament when Jesus Christ died on the cross of Calvary, was buried, and was resurrected the third day. The 'Old Covenant" was by Law and the "New Covenant" was by grace.
It's a form of binding agreement and solemn undertaking.
