a dust jacket is what folds around the book, which usually has the title and pictures on the front and a summary on the back and sometimes has a little about the author section on the side panel when you first open the book.

A dust jacket is a paper cover that wraps around and protects a hardcover book. It often includes the book's title, author, and artwork to make the book more visually appealing. Dust jackets are commonly found on new or special edition books.

The "dust jacket" is a outer paper cover over a hardback book. The dust jacket usually has on the front a photo or graphics image, the book title and author, the publisher name, and possibly a blurb about the book (ex. "The most fantastic other-worldly romance of the century.")

On the "spine" area of the dust jacket is the title or shortened title. The spine is the skinny part of the book you see as you walk through library or bookseller aisles. In libraries, rows of books are called "the stacks".

On the back of the dust cover may be things like: A book description; a photo of the author; short reviews of the book from well-known people; and an ISBN bar code.

Because dust jackets are paper, often glossy paper that can be easily damaged with imprints and dirt, libraries laminate the dust cover before loosely affixing it with special tape that goes on the inside and outside of the book's front cover and back cover.

Hardback books are the only ones produced and sold with dust jackets. Many people buy a hardback book, then remove the dust jacket because it slips off too easily. But on re-sale of older or out-of-print valuable books, the price increases if the original dust cover is intact and has not been laminated.

Hardback books without a dust jacket are often produced with a "plain looking" cover, with maybe just the title and author's name.

Soft-cover books never have dust jackets.

Should you remove the dust jacket to read the book?

I will not give you a Yes or a No -- instead I'll tell you what I do. I almost always remove the dust jacket and set it aside where it will be safe and not get dirty, torn, or creased. I then replace the jacket after I finish the book. I find that while reading - sitting in a chair, sitting at a table, propped up in bed, etc - the dust jacket moves around and slips up and down and side to side and gets some creases (or worse) on the top and bottom and sometimes the sides. If I want the dust jacket to remain intact, I remove it while reading and put it back on after I finish the book. I happened upon this question while researching the ways to make clear covers like you find on books at libraries. I plan to make clear covers for all of my books - whether they have a dust jacket or not - to protect the book and dust jacket, if there is one. I also plan to do something to add some protection to my very large collection of paperback books. I hope I helped you. Remember, if you take the dust jacket off, put it where it will not be damaged (in our case, since we have several cats, I have to be careful where I put a dust jacket) Bob
