Similar to coffee or chocolate, they give you a boost but you pay for it when that boost leaves. It drops you down to less energy than what you started with. I asked a doctor/friend of mine what is the best energy drink. He told me water. Its because your body can do more with water than any other drink.

Although they may taste good and give you a boost, they do not take care of lack of sleep. if you find yourself drinking them in the mornings because you did not get enough sleep the night before, you are putting too much stress on your body. when you need sleep, you have a nerve that sends a message to the brain signals it that you are tired. when you drink caffeine, it blocks that signal to the brain, thus giving you only a short energy boost. the after affects, however, are not fun to deal with. you may fall asleep in class, or become disstressed and moody. if you are hyperactive or have heart problems, you are at a serious risk.

Some "energy drinks" contain high levels of caffeine or other (usually relatively mild) stimulants as well as carbohydrates, which is where the "energy" comes from: your body normally gets most of its energy from metabolizing carbohydrates, and the stimulant kicks your metabolism into a higher gear.

However, the "energy drink" label lets you charge roughly 3x as much, so it's hardly surprising there are a number of companies manufacturing these. There's also a fringe benefit in that since it's being sold as a sort of quasi-"medicine", it doesn't even have to taste good... people expect medicine to taste nasty, because "that's how you know it's good for you."
