The terms "fat eighth" and "fat quarter" are used to describe a piece of fabric that has been cut from the bolt from the selvage to the fold, and 1/8 or 1/4 yard long. Normally, fabric is 44" wide, from selvage to selvage, and a normal 1/8 yard would measure 4.5" X 44" and a 1/4 yard would measure 9" X 44". These dimensions don't allow you to make very big pieces. To solve this problem, the quilting stores will cut a fat eighth 22" (from the edge to the fold) X 9" long, and a fat quarter is 22" X 18". Since it is cut half as wide, and twice as long as a "normal" eighth or quarter, it has the same number of square inches, but is a much more usable shape.
The origins of quilting are unknown; quilting has been around for thousands of years. The earliest known depictions of quilting is on an ancient Egyptian statue, dated 3400 B.C.
There are a large number of quilting magazines available. Some of the best known include Quilt, Quilt Sample, Quits and More, McCalls Quilting, Quilting For You, The Quilter Magazine, American Patchwork & Quilting, Primitive Quilts and Quiltmakers 100 Blocks.
In the phrase, 'eight fat penguins', the word eight is an adjective used to define the number of penguins. The number eight is a noun when it is used as a number, for example, 'the apartment is number eight', 'the eight of clubs', or 'eight plus two equals ten'. Please note that 'eight fat penguins' is not a sentence, there is no verb included.
The question is difficult to answer, as "properties" is not a quilting term. However, quilting consists of three layers (top, batt, and back) secured together by stitching.
