Giza (el-Gizah) is the city nearest to the location of the Sphinx and the Great Pyramid in central Egypt. It is only 20 km (12 miles) southwest of central Cairo. Five miles farther to the southwest is the old city, and the Giza Plateau where the ancient structures stand. They are at least 4500 years old and may be substantially more, because records from ancient Egypt's dynasties often appear contradictory.
