It means your phone cannot be used for other service networks. If you are on Vodaphone for example you cannot insert a T-Mobile sim and use to call/accept calls as it would not be recognised. You can get people to un-lock your phone at a cost, so you can use it on other networks. The Carphone warehouse tends not to lock phones to service providers. Hope this info helped.

Mobile phones used to be 'tied' or locked so they could only use ONE preset network. For example, a phone sold by T-Mobile would only work with a T-Mobile SIM card. This meant that the user was restricted to paying the charges for that specific network - despite the availability of other (possibly cheaper) - networks. Since the deregulation of the whole mobile phone industry, handsets are now sold 'unlocked' and will accept any suitably-sized SIM card for any network.

Why is a network lock needed for a phone?

Very good question ! There is absolutely no reason for a brand-new phone to be locked to a specific network. Phone manufacturers do it to restrict users to set (and often more expensive) tariffs - so they get the maximum money from the user !
