A summons from the court is an order to appear at the place, time and date noted. In civil cases the defendant is not required to appear, but failure to do so generally results in a default judgment for the plaintiff.
Please do not confuse a summons with a subpoena, they are two totally different court orders. NEVER fail to respond to a subpoena!
Added: Pay particular attention to the second paragraph above. In the comon vernacular the word "summons" is loosely used to describe both items. DO NOT CONFUSE THE TWO!

∙ 7y agoIt means you are required to attend a court hearing. If you do not attend without a VERY good reason - you can be imprisoned by the presiding judge. A 'very good reason' is something like - you're involved in a car accident - or are seriously ill... a headache, or a cold is not.
