The reason people have bad dreams is because of their thoughts just before sleep. Say, for example, James was thinking about his grandmother's death just a few moments before he went to sleep. Therefore he would be dreaming about death and would have a nightmare. The best way to prevent nightmares, or dreams of any kind is to go to sleep without any light, no music, and no television. Relaxation and beneficial thoughts work well in addition to the lack of sight and sound.

It may seem silly, but the first thing to do is to rule out any physical or medical cause. There may be insufficient sleep for some reason, ranging from apnea to a change in diet. There may be some social and/or emotional pressures that are troubling your dreams, or contributing to sleep loss. Perhaps a partner's sleep habits are involved. Use of substances including Rx medications and alcohol can disturb sleep and dreaming. Some people use alcohol to promote sleep, but they don't realize some important things about alcohol. If I were a doctor and I WANTED a patient to have troubled sleep, I would prescribe alcohol. In the long run, it will do the trick.

Dreams are not worth interpreting, really, if they are troubled following intake of food that is too plentiful or too spicy. You hit the tabasco a little hard last night? You did not see revelatory visions of the apocalypse.

Some people claim that they are impervious to the effects of caffeine. Bunk. You may indeed sleep after taking caffeine, but even if you do, your sleep patterns are disrupted.

Sleep Hygiene is a huge and important topic, one not discussed nearly enough.

If you have ruled out (with objective help-- no cheating!) physical/medical causes, then take a look at the social and/or emotional pressures that you are facing. More than likely, there is something going on that is able to be addressed and at the very least put into perspective.

Don't jump to spiritual explanations until and unless absolutely everything else has been taken confidently off the table... or pillow...

Try thinking about the activities you did during the whole day and be open minded
Do not hide any thing in your mind

The answer depends on what one thinks of as "nasty." Everyone from puberty onward experiences sexual dreams. These reflect a normal release of sexual tension and are no more "nasty" than using the toilet. Other sorts of nasty dreams might represent nasty emotions such as anger, hatred or bitterness that is too threatening to feel consciously. Such unacceptable feelings will be expressed and released as a normal function of dreams.

You have bad dreams because you watched a scary movie or you think of bad things so when you go to sleep you think of something good.

Bad dreams tend to occur either just after going to sleep, or just before waking in the morning. The leading cause tends to be dehydration, so it's worth drinking another glass of water with dinner, and keeping one by your bedside - don't skip drinking because you think it'll just make you need the loo in the middle of the night.

Another cause can be overheating - making sure your sleeping environment is comfortably cool is always helpful.

Trying to do something relaxing for about an hour before bedtime can help - read a slightly boring book, avoid watching the news, having stressful conversations, or using your computer.

If the bad dream is something in particular which keeps recurring, and it's bothering you, you may find it helpful to see a counsellor.

Bad dreams are very often caused by any type of anxiety, particularly when one cannot stop thinking about the thing, person or situation one is anxious about. A guilty conscience - the knowledge that one has done something wrong - can cause repetitive bad dreams. But bad dreams (nightmares) can be easily caused by watching scary films or television. Young children are especially vulnerable to such triggers. Other causes include illness and fever as well as certain medications, both prescription and over-the-counter. One's pharmacist is a good source of information about medication.
