The ivy leaf is the symbol of the sorority of ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA. Founded in 1908 by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle with the founding members they founded the group, making it the first soroity of African American women at Howard Unversity. In Washington, DC their colors, salmon pink & apple green, symbolize the ivy leaf.

Ivy leaves signify strong and lasting friendship. This association is derived from ivy's ability to stay attached to a rocky surface in even the most inhospitable conditions.

Ivy is believed to have many different representations. The Celtics are well known for their use of ivy woven adornments. Many use ivy to represent true/strong friendship or wedded love. This because it is durable and long-lasting and it grows in twists and spirals which can represent the twists and turns that relationships/friendships tend to take as they grow stronger. Ivy also has the ability to grow back or return after severe damage and that is another reason it is a good representation of a strong, affectionate bond.
