Basically, if you know they like either friend or more and you don't have any interest in them at all and the only reason you hang with them is to use them and benefit from them in some way, you are leading them on. If you want to establish a friendship or other relationship with them that's one thing, but if you have interest in neither and you play coy and tease them that is leading them on. Be a better person than that and tell them the truth, plainly, so they can move on with their lives.
To "lead someone on" is to intentionally cause them to believe that they are going to get whatever it is that they're hoping to get, even though you know they are not.

∙ 15y agoit means to act interested, available and willing, when you're really not. sumtimes one comes across as leading sum1 on, when they aren't trying to. its an easy thing to accidentally do, but watch yourself because it can ruin ur reputation really quickly.
