Because, Sherlock is like the expert at solving crimes.
Dr. Mortimer was one of the principle players in "The Hound of the Baskervilles", whose walking stick was found and shown to Holmes, who was able to deduce much about the man before seeing him. Mortimer needed help with addressing "The Baskerville Curse". :}
". . . . There is only one point on which I must insist. You must not interfere, come what may. You understand?"
___"I am to be neutral?"
___"To do nothing whatever. There will probably be some small unpleasantness. Do not join in it. It will end in my being conveyed into the house. Four or five minutes afterwards the sitting-room window will open. You are to station yourself close to that open window."
___"Yes."
___"You are to watch me, for I will be visible to you."
___"Yes."
___"And when I raise my hand - so - you will throw into the room what I give you to throw, and will, at the same time, raise the cry of fire. You quite follow me?"
___"Entirely."
___"It is nothing very formidable," he said, taking a long cigar-shaped roll from his pocket. "It is an ordinary plumber's smoke rocket, fitted with a cap at either end to make it self-lighting. Your task is confined to that. When you raise your cry of fire, it will be taken up by quite a number of people. You may then walk to the end of the street, and I will rejoin you in ten minutes. I hope that I have made myself clear?"
___"I am to remain neutral, to get near the window, to watch you, and, at the signal, to throw in this object, then to raise the cry of fire, and to await you at the corner of the street."
___"Precisely."
To be clear, a plumber's smoke rocket is basically what is now known as a smoke bomb.
Investigate the death of Sir Charles Baskerville to prevent the death of Sir Henry Baskerville.
'Sherlock Holmes' was first written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and then it was turned into several TV series and movies as well. [Not to mention plays, radio dramas, video games, audio recordings, etc., etc., etc.] It should be noted that Sherlock Holmes is now in the public domain. This means that anybody can write a Sherlock Homes story and need not fear a legal scolding. [Technically, the complete Sherlock Holmes will not be in the public domain until 2023 though most of it is already.] And Dr. Watson has also been very famous as he is known as the shadow of Sherlock Holmes.
Well, he isn't the first detective, but he IS the greatest detective!! Check out the answer to "What makes Sherlock Holmes special?" or something like that if you want to find out more about him!!!

You can tell by the way he dresses. Also the way they clearly pronunsiate and articulate thier words. You can see with the way the houses and buildings look that give away the fact that it was around the time queen Victoria was ruling. Of course, you will need to know around when that was and a little about what it was like back then.
He never "caught" him in the sense he was tried and convicted, rather Moriarty fell to his death on 4 May 1891 after wrestling with Holmes on a precarious ledge at Reichenbach falls. At the time, it was presumed that Holmes had fallen as well.

In 'The Final Problem,' Holmes is in need of help while fleeing from Professor Moriarty. In 'The Adventure of Black Peter,' the reason is presumably to search for the lost securities of John Hopley Neligan's father learned about during that investigation.

Watson loses his limp in the TV series 'Sherlock' because, according to Sherlock Holmes, his injury was psychosomatic.Answer:John Watson's bad leg and hand tremors were both psychosomatic. His psychologist believed the cause was post traumatic stress from fighting in Afghanistan as a soldier, but it was discovered, when John met Mycroft Holmes for the first time, that his hand tremor only happened when he didn't feel like he was in danger. He preferred the action and excitement of the war and he missed it. While spending time with Sherlock, they pursued a cab they thought carried the murderer they were looking for inside. John completely forgot about his cane as they gave chase and shortly thereafter realized he didn't need it as working with Sherlock provided him with all the excitement and danger he enjoyed.

A cat, definitely black with green eyes, i think Holmes would be perfect with a cat! can't you just see him absent mindedly stroking his cat, eyes closed, pipe smoke drifting lazily to the ceiling, head thrown back and legs crossed, listening to someone tell their story? WOW! I'm getting chills!
