Well, when there is a new moon the sky is completely black. No moon or no stars, and that's what it was like for Bella once Edward left. Everything was black and there was nothing to brighten up her life. She lived in a world of hurt and everything was gone according to her. Although in New Moon it also explains that Edward felt the same way once he left her.
