The omega is the lowest ranked wolf, so it commonly baby sits the pups while the others go hunting, and eats last. Sometims it helps out in a hunt, but never leads it.
The Omega is at the bottom of a pack. He/she is not respected or treated well most of the time. They have to do all sorts of work and chores and alot of pup-sitting. A wolf will become an Omega, usually if they did something wrong or bad.

Though all that may be true it turns out the Omega is still really important to the wolf pack they act as the clown so to say when pack members are about to fight he/she distract them by trying to play they may pick on them and the omega may eat last but they are still part of the family regardless and like almost any family if you are in danger, they come running.

Even though the omega is the lowest ranking wolf in a pack, it is still an important part of the pack. Omegas also are like advisors to other wolves.

People studying wolf packs use the Greek Alphabet to describe the importance of the various members of the pack. The most import male is the Alpha Male and the most important female is the Alpha Female. The Greek alphabet starts: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon. The second most important wolves are the Beta Male and Beta Female. Finally, after naming the top wolves, the unimportant wolves would simply be called omegas. When winter comes and hard times arrive, there might not be enough food for the entire pack. One by one, the omegas will be driven off from the pack. Some will starve because wolves need a pack to survive. Some will find a place where no other pack exists. (Perhaps a grizzly or hunters killed the last pack). Other omegas will join them. The largest male and female will become the new Alpha Male and Alpha Female. They will mate and raise a new family.

The "omega" is a name for a wolf observed in packs of captive gray wolves, packs usually formed by forcing together unrelated wolves. They were noted as tending to care for young cubs and running towards aggressive behaviour or fights to break them up by "clowning around" and instigating play activities to distract the wolves acting aggressively. It is also noted that they tend to eat last giving them them the perceived status of the last in line and thus the designation of the "omega" being the last letter of the Greek alphabet with the highest ranked animals being designated alpha, followed by beta etc. It was also suggested that the omega had lost its status in the pack for some action, or crime, against the pack or its leaders.

At the time these ideas were first described (~1940) it was believed that packs formed spontaneously from lone animals for mutual advantage with the most powerful male and females being dominant in the pack. These ideas have persisted for many decades and entered popular culture with more successful humans within social groups being described as alphas, this is especially true within business leadership structures.

However it is now believed that most, if not all, natural packs consist of a breeding pair of wolves with their cubs, and on maturity the cubs leave the pack. Many naturalists who wrote on wolf behaviour having now reexamined their observation in light of new information and the development of theories describing the benefits of biological altruism to a species.

This is an example of new scientific understanding, or ideas, cause past observations, and the inferences drawn from them, to be reconsidered often changing the entire way something is viewed (a paradigm shift).

From my own observation of dog behaviour, mothers only let extremely trusted humans or dogs near there puppies. Thus I would hypothesis that the "omega" wolves observed in captivity were unpaired wolves extremely well trusted, by at least the mother, allowing them to care for her cubs, and who tried to stop other perhaps more immature or violent, wolves from injuring themselves and others in fights. They also appear not to want to compete with the others of the pack, only stepping in when pack order is at risk. Rather than being an outcast this individual seems very important to the pack's continued well being.

It is always dangerous to related animal and human behaviour, but the best analogue I see in human society for an "omega" would be an older child, relative or highly trusted family friend, often being left in charge of small children who also happens to be a policeman. Alternatively, given that the behaviour is seen in captive animals perhaps a prison guard, or trustee, looking after violent, confused or vulnerable inmates?

The omega is the lowest ranking wolf in a pack. There is usually only one omega in a wolf pack (I think). The omega is picked on by other members of their pack. Omegas are important because the other wolves can pick on them to relieve stress and settle arguments, therefore reducing tenseness and grudges in the pack. Just a personal theory, but the omega might also keep the pups of the pack busy and happy by giving them attention so the mothers can have free time.

Is the Omega rank the punishment rank in a wolf pack in real life or is it for the most playful wolf?

Omega wolves are the lowest rank in the pack but because they have it, it doesn't mean they have an unhappy life. An omega wolf is treated equally in the pack except when the time to eat comes around the omega wolf is the last one to eat. The omega wolf's role is also to keep peace in the pack by starting play. The omega wolf doesn't take orders around by other wolves but they do submit to them.

How does a wolf become dominant?

Usually, this never happens. The Alpha wolf never mates with an omega because omegas are considered as the lowly wolves; they never get along. Unless you're talking about the movie, of course :) True, an alpha wolf will never mate with an omega wolf. However, there are cases where omega wolves rose to the rank of alpha wolves or left their pack and form their own, making them new alpha wolves. So yeah, an omega wolf will eventually mate an alpha wolf IF it's determine to be an alpha wolf Actually, a male alpha wolf will mate with all females of the pack. This ensures that only the strongest male of a pack has offspring.

Are alpha and omega dogs?

"Alpha" and "Omega" are titles of social roles usually given to wolves, although they are occasionally extended to dogs, in a pack. "Alpha" wolves/dogs were once thought to be the leaders of a pack, but are now known to be the parents (a pack is usually made up of family members). "Omega" wolves/dogs are the "general citizenry". You can think of alphas as the family patriarch or president of the wolf/dog pack, and omegas as the children-and-siblings or citizens of the wolf/dog pack. Of course, if you are referring to the 2010 movie "Alpha and Omega" then your answer is: No. The main characters of "Alpha and Omega" are wolves.
