The meaning of oxidizing is generally able to oxidize, to cause an oxidation. It can be thought of in several ways:

  • the addition of oxygen, or more generally an electronegative element
  • the removal of hydrogen
  • the loss of electrons.

In a chemical reaction the reactant that accepts an electron from another reactant is known as the oxidant. This is by extension to what happens when oxygen oxidises iron, for example. In classical terms we would say quite naturally that the oxygen is the oxidant. If we look more closely at what happens to electrons we would notice that the iron gives up an electron or two and the oxygen accepts it.

If something is an oxidizing agent, then it oxides something else, and it itself will be reduced. If it oxidizes something else, this means that it accepts or takes electrons from that other substance.

When a element oxidizes, it loses electrons, making the atom a positive ion. When a element is reduced, it gains electrons (or its charge becomes more negative).
