The most broad definition for "redacted" is "prepared for publication". The usual meaning, however, is that information has been removed from an existing document prior to release. Documents containing "classified" or otherwise sensitive information which could cause harm if not removed prior to release have that information "redacted" during the process of preparing the document(s) for release to the public or to the person or group that requested them. The areas where the information has been removed are identified but the contents of the redacted sections are obviously not otherwise revealed except to those with a need to know the information. Note that the requirement is NEED to know not WANT to know.
