"Step to the Alter" is the name of a quilt pattern. The spelling is "altar," meaning the table at the front of a church. So a "Step to the Altar" quilt would be made as a wedding quilt for a new bride and groom.

In Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, there are 4 different blocks called "Steps to the Altar." They are all complex pieced blocks (constructed of geometric pieces of cloth stitched together) in which the pieces represent stair steps leading to the church altar where the wedding vows are said.
