Shem literaly means Name.
Shem is the biblical sun of Noah, and is traditionally considered the father of Mediterranean people, which can be referred as 'Shemits', including Israelites (Jew or Palestinians) and Arabs, therefore people who racially abuse Jews or Arabs are reffered to as 'Antisemits'
Alternative- While shem does mean name, or rather what we call somebody, there is a concept behind the Hebrew shem that is lost in English in modern times. Shem refers to the name bearers reputation, character, authority, even power. To do something "in the name of God" is not related to whether his name is said or not said, doing something in his name is doing something according to his character and/or will. (authority)
