In general the carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) symbolizes love, fascination, distinction, admiration, gratitude and luck. In France they symbolize misfortune and bad luck. They are the birth flower for January and the first anniversary flower. There are symbols based on color as well:

  • Red: symbol of socialism and the labor movement
  • Light red: admiration
  • Dark red: deep love and affection
  • White: purity, love and good luck
  • Variegated: regret that a love can't be shared
  • Purple: capriciousness or condolence
  • Pink: a mother's undying love or love and gratitude toward a parent & I'll always be there for you.
  • Green: symbol for homosexuality
  • Yellow: rejection and disdain
