All medical directional terms work by assuming the person is in the anatomical position, that is stood up with their arms by their sides, palms facing forward. Lateral describes something that is further away from the midline than something else. The midline is the line that you could draw straight down the middle of a person, i.e. between their eyes, down through their nose and to the floor. For example, the ears are lateral to the eyes, and the eyes are lateral to the nose. The opposite is medial, i.e. towards the midline.
