In hieroglyphs there are three signs which show eyes in different formats:

  1. two opposed eyes seen from the front, with cosmetic applied and with falcon markings - this is the ideogram for the verb ptr, to view or observe.
  2. a single eye drawn frontally without any cosmetics - this can have the sound value ir, or it can be the determinative sign for m33, to see.
  3. a single eye with cosmetic applied is the determinative for actions or conditions of the eye.
