Other than it's normal anatomical meaning, The Bible describes various gestures, which communicate one's thoughts or feelings, which involve the feet. For example, placing a foot on one's enemy shows victory and dominance for the one standing, defeat and submission for the one downfallen and vanquished (Josh 10:24; Ps. 110:1; and 1 Cor. 15:25). To shake the dust off one's feet is a sign of contempt and separation (Matt. 10:14; Acts 13:51). To wash the feet of another is to humble oneself as a servant (John 13:18). Lifting one's heel against another shows opposition (Ps. 41:9; John 13:18). To cover one's feet is to relieve oneself with some degree of privacy (Judge. 3:24; 1 Sam. 24:3). To uncover one's feet or to walk barefoot indicates grief or repentance (2 Sam. 15:30; Isa. 20:2).Uncovering one's feet as in the case of Ruth with Boaz (Ruth 3:4) was an established practice, indicating not only one's willingness to marry but also the protection of the husband over his wife.
