The fuel pump shut off switch ( inertia switch ) opens the circuit to the
electric fuel pump so that no power is going to the fuel pump when the
vehicle has received a substantial jolt ( collision or maybe hitting a bad
pot hole )
It is a safety device that has to be manually reset if the switch " trips "
On a 1998 Ford Contour : The fuel pump shut off switch ( inertia switch ) is located in the drivers footwell behind the kick panel . There is an access hole through the panel ( it's near the inside hood release )

Chevrolet actually never had a fuel cut off switch like the ford rollover switch if that is what you are talkin about. hope this helps.
Try looking in the passenger side kick panel. Up sort of under the dash. This is where my 95 Contour was.
