To oversimplify it, the ionosphere either reflect microwaves or allows it to pass through depending upon its frequency, the threshold is approximately 100MHz. Anything below that gets reflected anything higher passes through.
ionosphere
the ionosphere is important is the it is in the thermosphere
The ionosphere gets its name from it being charged with ions. It is called the ionosphere because it is in the shape of a sphere.

Another name for the ionosphere is the thermosphere.
Microwaves. These poke through the ionosphere to reach the satellite
GPS satellites use microwaves to transmit information in binary. They use microwaves because they are low frequency and can pass through the ionosphere without being reflected.
Radio waves are reflected by many solid objects, such as wood, stone, and notably metal, allowing the use of microwaves in radar applications. Also importantly in broadcast radio, the ionosphere (an upper layer of the Earth's atmosphere) can bounce signals back down to locations beyond the line-of-sight horizon.
The Ionosphere.
The Ionosphere
The thermosphere contains the ionosphere. The ionosphere is the layer that is ionized by the solor radiation.
