Sig is short for signa. Signa is the name for the directions on a prescription for taking a medication.
WHEN A DOCTOR WRITES OUT A prescription, there are a certain number of things that have to appear on a prescription for it to be valid: NAME OF PATIENT, TYPE OF MEDICATION, DOSE OF MEDICATION, ROUTE OF MEDICATION, DURATION OF TREATMENT or QUANTITY OF MEDICATION and the DOCTORS SIGNATURE, AND DATE. SOME DOCTORS use the term "SIG." WHICH MEANS "these are my directions" (for use of the medication.) For instance: the prescription may read: "Xanax .25mg. tabs." "sig: 1 tab TID (three times a day) PO (by mouth) for 30 days. Disp. (dispense) #90" Sig. is what directions the doctor wants the pharmacist to write on the label. Not ALL doctors use "sig." <<>>
