It means that your relay is out, and has to be replaced with a new one, and once its been replaced, your check engine light will turn off in about 20 minutes or so.
There ar pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked for codes to know what to diagnose.

If the "check engine" light is coming on, the computer has detected a "fault", meaning that it knows something is wrong. Even if the light goes back off you should be able to read the codes and find out what the computer has detected. Borrow, rent or buy a code scanner at your local auto parts retailer then connect it and find out what the computer has to tell you.

Reset 'check engine light'1. turn the key to the on position (do not crank over the motor....dont start the engine2. wait 3 seconds.... and then fully step on the gas and let go fully 5 times with in 5 seconds.... (ex. wait...3....stomp.stomp.stomp.stomp.stomp )3. wait 6seconds....(not steppig on gas pedal)4. FULLY PRESSS down on gas pedal and hold for about 10 seconds.5. the check engine light should be flashing. should be flashing 10times and stop a few seconds and then 10 and stop.....etc.6. hold down pedal again 10 secs.7. release pedal.....turn key off.....8. wait... a few seconds and turn the motor on.....check engine light should be gone.
EPC means Electronic Pedal Control. Volkswagen uses an electronic system, not just a cable running from the gas pedal to the throttle, to control engine speed. It would make implementing cruise control REAL easy, if nothing else. If you have an EPC light on...that's the car's Check Engine light.
You discount the negative cable from the battery and press the brake pedal for at least ten seconds.

The change oil light is reset by turning the key on, engine off, and pressing the gas pedal three times.The check engine light can only be reset with a scan tool. The cause of the fault needs repaired or the light will return.
Above the gas pedal, under the dash, there is 2 wires with clips that you plug together. Check engine light will flash the codes recorded in the ecu.
If it comes on when you step on the brake pedal you might need to bleed your brakes. Also check your brake fluid in the master cylinder.
Is the check engine light on? If so, have the codes pulled at just about any parts store. Could be several things. First thing that comes to mind is a bad idle air control valve.
