The prefix "phys" might originate from the latin word "physica", which means the study of nature. Physics came to mean the study and practice of medicine sometime in the Middle Ages, and at that time words similar to "physical" related to medicine, hence "physician". Of course, physics eventually became the study of matter and energy, and now words similar to physical mean simply that - tangible, observable things found in our world.
