Proto is from the Greek πρῶτος meaning 'first'. It is mainly used in scientific/technical terms to mean 'first' or 'original', such as protogalaxy - a mass of gas not yet formed into stars but thought to eventually become a galaxy. Note, the second term is also often from a Greek base.
