"Pulling" a tooth is a laymans term for a dental extraction. After reviewing the patient's health history, the dentist will administer local anesthetic by injection. First, the soft tissue attachment is severed from the tooth. Then the tooth is luxated or loosened buy applying pressure to it with specialized instruments that actually expand the bone around the tooth causing enlargement of the boney socket that surrounds the tooth. Some teeth can be removed simply by doing this. Others require the use of a forcep. Forceps are specially shaped instruments that resemble a plyers. They come in many sizes and shapes. Selection depends upon which tooth is being removed. With a forcep, the dentist can rock the tooth back and forth to further enlarge the socket and then, after significant mobility is achieved, gentle rotation and twisting forces can be applied to remove the tooth taking care not to break off a root. Some teeth are very solid or angled in such a way that they must be cut into pieces or have bone cut away around the tooth before removal. And finally, for those teeth that still can not be removed by luxation, forceps, sectioning, and bone removal, there's this stuff called dynamite. Two sticks taped to the jaw below and beside the tooth work nicely but should only be used as a last resort because it can be messy.

If a child has several baby teeth than it is probably a good idea for them to stop. Sucking their thumb at this age can cause tooth problems such as bent teeth. Many dentists reccommend that if a child is eating solid foods on their own, they should stop sucking on their thumbs to prevent such problems that can sometimes cause a need for braces later in life.
