The Pond's Symbolic Meaning
The pond in the movie adaptation of On Golden Pond is used as a symbolic reference to life itself. Throughout the movie many scenes take place on, in and around the tranquil waters of the pond.

In these various well-filmed scenes, you see characters struggling with challenges, heartaches and grudges (aging, a troubled father-daughter relationship, teenage rebellion, generation gaps, the boating accident, Norman's obsession with dying) while simultaneously rejoicing in triumphant victories (seeing and eventually catching - and releasing - Walter) and overcoming deep resentment (Norman giving Chelsea a diving medal for doing the back flip).

It is as much a coming-of-age story as it is a tribute to a remarkable "end of the ages" journey - with the pond truly representing the full "circle of life."
