The scroll box on the vertical scroll bar indicates the position of the page or location on the page. If the scroll box is in the middle of the slide, the location is on the middle of the current page. A long bar indicates that the page size is very small.

Use the scroll bar to the right of the screen. Click on any area outside the vertical scroll bar, and the display will move by one whole screen - either up or down.
Personally, I use the vertical scroll bar when I've got my window shrunken down to something less than full-screen. Sometimes, a message stretches out the window as well so I have to scroll over to continue reading, even if it is full-screen
