We have 4 advent candles and a white one for Christmas Eve. The first,second, and the fourth candle are purple and the third one is pink. During these 4 weeks, we prepare the coming of our Lord.

∙ 13y agoEach candle represents something different. The first purple candle is for hope, the second for love. The pink candle is lit 3rd and represents joy. Finally, we light the final purple candle, which is for peace. On Christmas Day we typically light the centre white candle, which is the Christ Candle.

They symbolize the coming celebration of Christmas, when Christ the Light of the World was born in Bethlehem. The wreath originated in Germany, and in some countries there is a special ceremony, with prayers and hymns, associated with the lighting of the candles on the Sundays of Advent.
The candles are purple because Advent is a penitential season, but the third one is rose as the theme of the liturgy that Sunday is of joy.
