It is called the prophecy candle. Isaiah foretold the birth of Jesus. The candle symbolizes our desire and hope for the return of our Lord Jesus.

We have 4 advent candles and a white one for Christmas Eve. The first, second, and the fourth candle are purple and the third one is pink. During these 4 weeks, we prepare the coming of our Lord.

Each candle represents something different. The first purple candle is for hope, the second for love. The pink candle is lit 3rd and represents joy. Finally, we light the final purple candle, which is for peace. On Christmas Day we typically light the centre white candle, which is the Christ Candle.

Roman Catholic Answerfrom Modern Catholic Dictionary by John A. Hardon, S.J. Doubleday & Co., Inc. Garden City, NY 1980

Advent Wreath. A band or circle of green foliage, surrounding four candles that may be enclosed in glass and are lighted successively in the four weeks of the Advent season. They symbolize the coming celebration of Christmas, when Christ the Light of the World was born in Bethlehem. The wreath originated in Germany, and in some countries there is a special ceremony, with prayers and hymns, associated with the lighting of the candles on the Sundays of Advent.

The candles are purple because Advent is a penitential season, but the third one is rose as the theme of the liturgy that Sunday is of joy.

The Advent wreath is not an official part of the liturgy, it is just a decoration. As such, it has no "official" meaning; the candles on the wreath just stand for the four Sundays of Advent, any other meanings are added by particular individuals.

• 1st CANDLE - (purple) THE PROPHECY CANDLE or CANDLE OF HOPE - We can have hope because God is faithful and will keep the promises made to us. Our hope comes from God. See Romans 15:12-13.

• 2nd CANDLE - (purple) THE BETHLEHEM CANDLE or THE CANDLE OF PREPARATION - God kept his promise of a Savior who would be born in Bethlehem. Preparation means to "get ready". Help us to be ready to welcome YOU, O GOD! See Luke 3:4-6.

• 3rd CANDLE - (pink) THE SHEPHERD CANDLE or THE CANDLE OF JOY - The angels sang a message of JOY! See Luke 2:7-15.

• 4th CANDLE - (purple) THE ANGEL CANDLE or THE CANDLE OF LOVE - The angles announced the good news of a Savior. God sent his only Son to earth to save us, because he loves us! See John 3:16-18.

• 5th CANDLE - (white) the center candle, the "CHRIST CANDLE" - The white candle reminds us that Jesus is the spotless lamb of God, sent to wash away our sins! His birth was for his death, his death was for our birth! See John 1:29.

When do you light the fifth candle of advent?

The white candle in the center of the wreath is the 5th candle - that is lit on Christmas or Christmas eve at Mass.Roman Catholic AnswerTechnically the Advent wreath doesn't have a fifth candle. A fifth candle is making into something other than an Advent wreath. Advent has four weeks, and there is a candle for each week. The Advent wreath should be taken down before the Christmas midnight Mass begins. I think the "fifth candle" is some modern invention that makes no sense.
