I don't think it actually means anything but they use the skull a lot... I have a skull on one of my metallica shirts and a skull on my metallica poster... I'm pretty sure its just their sign or symbol to represent them.
the skull is a sign of danger, death, and poison. pirates in cartoons are seen as evil, ugly, and unfriendly. so, likewise, the skull is used to represent the pirates behavior and personality. :)
