The main purpose of the stomach is to digest proteins. And, most of the time it does not do a complete job and it has to be finished digesting in the duodenum, the first part of the the small intestine. It also churns up the food using a muscular movement.

Mechanical breakdown (masseration) - It pretty much churns the food up and physically breaks it down.

Kills bacteria - The acid is mainly there for killing harmful bacteria but also creates a nice acidic environment (low pH) for the digestive enzyme pepsin to break down protein.

Storage Sack - Stores your food. If it were to all go down at once, digestion would not be that efficient.

It holds pepsin an acid and hydrocloricacicd they both help digest food. Without hydrocloricacid pepsin takes a very long time to digest foods
