∙ 14y ago"Down the river" is American Southern dialect that just means "further along the river." During the slave trade, "selling someone down the river" meant selling a slave to someone who lived far away - this was done to split up groups who were thought to be causing trouble, or to get rid of any troublesome slave.
Nowadays, you might hear this phrase used to mean betrayal, as in someone was "sold out."
