Water represented life and the spirit. In the 4th chapter of John Jesus met a woman at the well and asked her for a drink, but went on to explain that the water He wanted to offer she would never thirst again. It would be like a well springing up that would never run dry which is represented by the Holy Spirit.
Water probably means purity, clean, or life.
