X can mean a number of things.

  1. The teacher might mark the problem with an X to say you got it wrong.
  2. It might be used as a multiplication sign, such as in 2x3=6.
  3. In algebra, there are problems such as "4+5=x. Find x." This is utterly pointless, because the x is obviously right there.
  4. On report cards nowadays in elementary schools (at least in the United States), there are letter codes instead of the traditional A, B, C, D, F system. These are usually only used for P.E., General Music, Orchestra, etc. in my experience. These are as follows: E = Exceeds Expectations, M = Meets Expectations, N = Needs Improvement, and (this last one didn't exist when I was in elementary school), X = Needs Extra Attention.

There you have it. Four different definitions of X. I hope one of them answered your question...

Juan scored 5 points higher on his midterm and 13 points higher on his final than he did on his first exam If his mean average score was 90 what was his score on the first exam?

---- ASSUMPTIONS: First Exam = X Midterm Exam = X + 5 Final Exam = X + 13 Mean Average Score for the 3 exams above = 90 ---- SOLUTION: 90 = [X + (X + 5) + (X + 13)] / 3 90 * 3 = [X + (X + 5) + (X + 13)] 270 = 3X + 18 270 - 18 = 3X 252 = 3X 252 / 3 = X 84 = X Conclusion: Juan scored 84 points on his first exam. (See below for proof) ---- PROOF: First Exam = X = 84 Midterm Exam = X + 5 = 89 Final Exam = X + 13 = 97 Mean Average of 90 points --> [84 + 89 + 97] / 3 = 270 / 3 = 90

What does it mean when a blood test shows DNR as a result?

DNR may mean: "Did Not Report." It may mean they did not run one particular test ("X") because a previous test ("Y") outruled the possibility of "X" being either positive or negative. For instance, if test "X" is for which kind of virus one has, and test "Y" is a test for any viruses, they would report "DNR" to test "X" if test "Y" came back saying one has no viruses at all.
