At the beginning of WW2, America refused to be apart of it, prefering to stick to their previous foreign policy of isolationism. Isolationism was a by product of WW1, Americnas after seeing the destruction of the European war, wanted to distance themselves from any possibility that it may affect them. Thus when World War 2 broke out, America refused to become involved. America did help England and Russia, with lend - lease. This being the lending of American goods, without payment till the war was over. However on December 7, 1941, Japan in an unprovoked attack, bombed Pearl harbour. this reversed American opinion on involvement in the war completely. Suddenly America mobilised to defeat japan, and after Hitler declared war on the US as a show of solidarity to the Japanese, the US was mobilised in the European theatre of the war also.
protected large cities
Before entering WWII, the U.S. did not want to physically help by deploying troops as to not anger the Axis powers, seeing that they wanted to keep relations. However; they did send tanks, rations, planes, fuel, and vehicles to the Allied powers. Also, several men volunteered to go serve in the European theater.
The rationing was one way. People were willing to go along with that. Uh, corporations totally switched their lines of production from peacetime products to wartime products. People agreed to carpool, people agreed to... buy [war] bonds. Uh, citizens particpiated in blackouts, maing cities less susceptible to air bombardment. Women who hadn't worked outside the homes started to. In other words, your average citizen sacrificed quite a bit, which is something that isn't- isn't asked of citizens of more contemporary wars.
They were the backbone of the war effort -- they took care of collecting resources, some transportation, and production. --
The women worked and the men fought.
