The scent.
In the movie The Fox and the Hound, Copper is a young "hound dog." In other words, a hunting dog. Hunting dogs are chosen and trained to have an amazing sense of smell. Copper is able to find Todd because of his smell.
Those types of hounds are trained to recognize the smell of a fox, allowing them to catch it's scent and follow it to the source. Humans created this breed to try and bring down the fox population, which would often kill chickens and the like.
The fox is called Tod and the hound is called Copper.
