That depends where in the world you live. If you live USA the best way to find out is to contact you states department of health or professional regulations. In Illinois it requires you to first become a certified EMT-B. THen you have to get into Paramedic school which will last antwhere from 10 months to 24 months. During which time you will spend time outside the classroom on an ambulance practicing skills you learn in class. You will also be required to spend hours in various departments in the hospital doing the same. I hope this if nothing else partially answers your question.

Although there is a National Registry with its own guidelines. Each state will have its own guidelines as to the scope of practice for each level of Emergency Medical Care.Generally a Basic EMT course with clinical rotations and a state exam followed by a board before the medical director is required to get the ball rolling. In NC we also have an EMT Intermediate certification which requires more study and responsibility. This is the step before the Paramedic level. All levels require a class, clinicals, state exam, oral boards,continuing education.

To be a paramedic, no matter what state, you need to go to school to be an EMT-Basic first, and then, once you passed and your licensed, you can go to school to be a paramedic. Most EMT-B courses take anywhere from a month to a semester. A paramedic course takes anywhere from 8 months to a full year. Besides the classroom hours you also need to complete 500 clinical hours as well, which means working in both a hospital and an EMS agency of some sort without pay. It's incredibly intense and difficult, but it's the best job ever.
