The British concept of liberty was not unlike the concept of liberty here in America. The English cherish the right of liberty above all else in the 18th century; the ideal of guidance for governors and the constitutionality of the government.
A state did not give New York the Statue of Liberty. The statue was a gift from France, to commemorate a century of history for America.

Hard Ship Nothing to my knowledge. Since the 19th Century Lady Liberty has always been portrayed wearing Roman-type dress, complete with sandals.
The name of the island was formerly Bedloe's Island. At the start of the 20th century, people called it Liberty Island. In 1956, the official name became 'Liberty Island'.
