Hormones are chemical messengers produced by cells that bind to receptors on the plasma membrane of other cells or enter other cells and alter the metabolic function of these cells.

Examples of altered metabolic function:

Alter plasma membrane permeability by opening or closing gated ion channels,

Stimulate the synthesis of proteins, more specifically enzymes,

Activate or deactivate enzymes that are already made,

Induce secretory activity,

Stimulate cell division

They control how the body develops. Testosterone is the male sex hormone and it controls controls the changes from a boy to a man e.x. deeper voice, facial and chest hair growth, and the development of male sex organs. Females also produce a bit of testosterone. Estrogen and progesterone are female sex hormones that help in the production of eggs (female sex cell), breast development, widening of hips, and development of female sex organs. Estrogen also causes females to have a growth spurt. But in males the excess testosterone is converted into estrogen in the brain that is why males start growing later during puberty.

In general we talk about two sex hormones.

Testosterone and Progesterone.

Males produce Testosterone and small quantities of Progesterone.

Females produce Progesterone and small quantities of Testosterone.

These hormones are in general held accountable for the development of male and female properties/genitals.

Further more as the genitals get developed, the production increases and some changes also happen in brain.

We experience the feeling of lust and want for sex.

Those with low levels of these hormones do seldom want sex.
