Internationalism should be pursed to a high extent because it promotes cooperation, peace, and security between nations. Nations are brought together by internationalism.

To the extent that it serves the well being of your nation. A nation is sovereign in the world. In a democracy the welfare of the citizens is utmost in interest of the leadership. If an international position serves the purposes of the citizens it should be pursued. If not it should not be pursued. It is not a one-size-fits-all answer.
