It was by the two brothers that made the first airplane. They are commonly known as the Wright brothers.

Submitting and receiving a patent for a design doesn't mean the design actually works. There were many people who designed airplanes and such but all of them crashed. The Wright Brothers were (supposedly) the first to demonstrate that an airplane could sustain powered flight and not just gliding.
Wilbur and Orville Wright, the Wright Brothers. Their first powered controlled airplane called the flyer was a Biplane. Bi meaning two, thus two wings...
The Wright Brothers were ready to make the first test flight on 14th December 1903 and Wilbur, as the elder and team leader (having the most aeronautical knowledge) was the first to try. They prepared the aircraft and launched it in front of an audience of five men from the local life saving station, two small boys and a dog. However, after launching Wilbur dropped a wing and the aircraft slewed back into the sand, needing some repairs. By the time these were done and the weather good again, it was the 17th December. This was then Orville's turn and he was credited with the first 'official' controlled, powered aeroplane flight.
