Wild rabbits are herbivores. They feed on leafy weeds, forbs, and grass. Leafy greens of sorts should also be good for rabbits.

What kind a feed does a rabbit eat?

The word "feed" usually refers to dried, processed foods that are given to animals. The only kind of feed that rabbits can eat is pellets made specifically for rabbits. If the package of feed lists any animal other than rabbit, then it is extremely unhealthy for rabbits. Rabbits have specific dietary requirements and only rabbit feed is okay for them. Feed should only make up a small portion of a rabbit's diet. The most important part of a rabbit's diet is hay. In addition, rabbits can also eat fruits and vegetables in moderation. Dark leafy greens (like dark coloured lettuce) are good for a rabbit's daily "salad" but all other vegetables (like carrot, tomato) should be considered treats. Too many treats can lead to serious illness in a rabbit. A previous user wrote that rabbits can eat pretzels and bread but these foods are very unhealthy for rabbits and can lead to serious illness. Rabbits shouldn't eat any processed human foods at all. See the related question below for more information about a rabbit diet.

What foods are safe for rabbits?

Many foods are "safe" for rabbits, but not all of them are healthy. When thinking about what to feed your rabbit, it's easier (and safer) to consider what they should be eating, not what they can or can't eat. See the related question below for more details and helpful links. Rabbits should eat a diet of mostly hay, with some pellets and fresh leafy greens (e.g. mint, carrot greens, celery greens) daily. Any other foods (e.g. bite of carrot, 1 blueberry, slice of banana) should be considered treats and strictly limited. Do not feed rabbits chocolate, crackers, or any human foods, or anything that isn't widely recommended for rabbits.
