Fruits and vegetables as such does not actually produce electricity.

They do however poduce various acids.

These acids can and will together with various metals make it possible to shift electrons from one metal to another.

Metals can not be the same. Metals like Copper, Silver and Zinc work very well. Preferably Copper and Zinc, or Silver and Zinc. Copper and Silver works too, but produces lower voltage.

It is the electrons flowing from one metal to another via the acid that makes the electricity.

Note:

many factors determine the actual voltage and the current possible to drain from your home-made battery.

The current is dependent on the contact surface of your chosen metals. Very large surface can make a large current. Small surface makes a small curent.

The voltage is dependent on how many fruit 'batteries' you connect in series. you may get between 0.2 and 2 volt per fruit, depending on metal and how acidic the fruit is. Citrus fruits like lemon is very suitable.

Warning:

Do not eat the fruit afterwards as they will contain a dissolved solution of metals. That may be harmfull.
