History
Shakespeare's plays are usually divided into comedy, tragedy and history. Even if you count some of the comedies as romances, there are still half as many more again of the comedies as there are of tragedies or histories.
Shakespeare wrote his plays in four distinct genres: comedy, like Twelfth Night; tragedy, like King Lear; romance, like The Tempest; and history, like Julius Caesar. He also wrote some plays, like Measure for Measure, that are not easily put into any category and have both tragic and comic elements. Shakespeare scholars call these plays "problem" plays.
